Description

The description of the event.

A two-day workshop offered by the Society of American Archivists (SAA), will be held at the University of Montana’s Mansfield Library in Missoula May 18-19, 2020.

To register: Contact Donna McCrea at donna.mccrea@umontana.edu or call (406) 243-4403 (class is limited to 30 participants)

CE category: 14 credits - library services to the public

Intended Audience:

Employees of archives and other cultural heritage repositories whose responsibilities include providing in-person and online access to unpublished materials (for example: diaries, letters, photographs, architectural drawings, oral histories, home movies, local government records and other business records.)

Workshop Information:

Overall, the workshop is aimed at a broad spectrum of archivists, librarians, curators and records managers from a variety of institutional sizes and types - and the content they manage.

This workshop is designed to help archivists and other cultural heritage professionals better understand:

  • how to provide accurate information to researchers who wish to reproduce or repurpose their repository’s holdings for personal use or in publications and public spaces;
  • when and how repositories can legally use images, documents, audiovisual recordings and other content in their collections for their own exhibits, programming, publications and websites;
  • what rights repositories have to create preservation and use copies of their own holdings; and
  • how to systematically conduct and quantify a risk assessment for use of copyrighted materials for a range of archives functions.

The workshop instructor, William Maher, is the University Archivist and a Professor of Library Administration at the University of Illinois. He has decades of experience in archives management and is a recognized expert on U.S. copyright law for archivists. He is a former president of SAA and for several years has represented SAA at semi-annual treaty meetings on copyright exceptions held at the World Intellectual Property Organization. Professor Maher has been offering this workshop for over 20 years.

A few weeks in advance of the workshop, Maher will solicit case-specific questions from registrants so that he can research special cases and then tailor his delivery accordingly. Participants may be expected to complete readings in advance and there will be homework the first evening.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Society of American Archivists.

Registration:

Financial support to reduce the workshop registration fee for Montanans has been provided by the University of Montana’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library and the Northwest Archivists, Inc.

  • Registration fee for Montana residents = $50 per person.
  • Registration fee for non-Montana residents = $150 for Northwest Archivists members, $299 for SAA members, $329 for SAA institutional members, and $419 for non-members.
