Description

Description

The description of the event.

This workshop will offer a practical guide to planning for libraries, including why and when to conduct planning, and the pros and cons of different types of planning.  Highlighting the role of library trustees, participants will leave the session with a better understanding of planning for libraries, expected outcomes, projected costs and benefits, and appropriate planning models for different types and sizes of libraries, with a focus on smaller, rural libraries.

A tentative outline of the topics to be covered in the workshop are:

  • What is planning (and what it is not)
  • Types of planning, including strategic and long-range planning
  • Typical processes in planning
  • Planning for the changing world of libraries
  • How to use planning to advance connections and service to the community
  • Outcomes of planning processes
  • Expected costs and timeframes to conduct planning

The session will include handouts, presentations, and plenty of time for questions and answers from attendees.   Participants will leave with both an enthusiasm for planning, but also with a practical framework for appropriate planning processes for their library and community.
