PRE CONFERENCE SESSION

Librarians need nuts & bolts training in collection development, but they also have a need to discuss some of the concerns they have about the current climate of collection development.   What are the 1st Amendment issues to consider when asked to segregate or label parts of the collection?  What about when asked to remove an item?  What’s best practice for handling a complaint or concern – both with the policy and process?  Can non-community members challenge our local items?  Can we limit the number of challenge requests?  Can we do away with the reconsideration process – especially if there is another avenue for filing a complaint?

Let’s also discuss Silent Censorship – the impact of libraries being caught in the culture wars on collection development, displays, and cataloging.

Beth Boyson is an Adult Programming and Outreach Librarian and Cataloger (retired) from Bozeman Public Library.
