The description of the event.

How can a public library achieve true sustainability? Intellectually, we all understand what's at stake—the future livability of the planet and our communities. But developing a library's sustainability goals in the shadow of climate catastrophe can feel daunting. In 2024, Missoula Public Library, in competition with six libraries from around the world, became the first library in the US to win the prestigious IFLA-De Gruyter Green Library-Grand Scale award. Buoyed by this achievement, MPL will launch its new Sustainable Libraries Certification journey in 2025. In this session MPL executive director Slaven Lee and MPL Foundation director Karl Olson will discuss the Sustainable Libraries "triple bottom line" (environment, economics, equity), and share MPL's three scalable planks of a library's sustainability platform (energy engineering, wellness design, and social sustainability). Participants will engage in a personalized creative visioning activity and explore the sustainability "secret sauce" already at work in their organizations.

Slaven Lee is the Executive Director at Missoula Public Library

Karl Olson is the Executive Director of the Missoula Public Library Foundation
