Jennifer Birnel has a Master of Education degree, a BS in Middle Grades Education, and BA in Organizational Communications. She taught middle school language arts and social studies for 12 years. She was hired by the State Library in 2011 as a technology trainer. In 2013 she became the Montana History Portal Director for the Montana State Library. In this role she oversees the ongoing implementation of this project including the addition of new collections, website design, and communication with the Portal membership. She recruits contributors and provides training.
