Virginia Harris, Selya Avila, Amanda Allpress
This session introduces the expanding field of library social work, highlighting effective models for integrating social service support into public library settings. Participants will learn practical strategies for identifying and securing grants to launch or sustain social work initiatives, including community partnerships and program-aligned funding streams. The training also outlines pathways for connecting with university social work programs to build student internship pipelines, collaborative projects, and long-term academic partnerships. Social workers are a natural fit within libraries because libraries are often the first, safest, and most accessible point of contact for community members navigating complex social, economic, and mental-health needs.
Virginia Harris brings a rich and varied background to library social work, having spent over ten years as a high school educator and seven years as a community farmer before earning an MSW from the University of Montana. These experiences fostered a deep understanding of resilience, learning, and connection, values that now guide her work in public libraries. Virginia entered the social work field to better serve her community and help create accessible, compassionate support for vulnerable patrons.
Selya Avila gained her library chops through years of experience in the Circulation Department before transitioning to the role of Community Engagement Specialist at the Missoula Public Library. She values supporting her community by building collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations. She is particularly focused on working with priority populations, ensuring they have access to resources that foster growth and connection. Selya is now pursuing her Master of Social Work at the University of Montana so she can continue expanding her ability to serve the community.
Amanda Allpress is the Assistant Director of Community Engagement at the Missoula Public Library, where her and her team are dedicated to building connections through outreach, partnerships, and inclusive programming. She’s held many roles in the library world, including Reference Librarian, YA Librarian, Technical Services Assistant, and Circulation Assistant, giving her a well-rounded view of how the whole operation ticks. Amanda enjoys library work almost as much as she enjoys digging in her garden. At home, she’s kept on her toes by six spirited bird dogs and three opinionated cats.
