roposal was submitted by the Montana House Bill 412 Advisory Committee to change the name Squaw Reservoir, which is considered by some to be derogatory. The current name first appeared on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps in 1993; the origin of the name is not known. The proposed new name is Buffalo Reservoir. The 38 m (125 ft) long reservoir lies in Custer National Forest, approximately 5.3 km (3.3 mi) southeast of the community of Sykes Corner and 4 km (2.5 mi) south-southeast of Burditt Reservoir. There are 110 features in Montana in which the name “Buffalo” occurs; two of these are streams named Buffalo Creek in Carter County.

Montana Geographic Names Advisor Recommendation - Oppose
Domestic Names Committee Decision Date - Thursday, January 13, 2005
Domestic Names Committee Discussion - A motion was made and seconded not to approve this name change, citing the lack of support from the Montana State Geographic Names Board and the U.S. Forest Service, both of which suggested the word “Buffalo” is already widely used throughout the State.
