Abstract:
This layer shows Montana's mountain ranges. It includes ranges of large extent shown in the federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and certain other ranges whose names are in common use.
For the most part, the boundaries of these ranges were drawn to only include the areas that are labeled with the range names on U.S. Geological Survey maps, and to not include foothills. Some mountain ranges have boundaries described in the online records of the U.S. Board of Geographic Names (BGN) and their boundaries in this geodatabase conform to those descriptions. Some of the features do not completely conform with the GNIS or the BGN descriptions, and these discrepancies are indicated in the Comments field.
These data are based on a layer created by Ed Madej and Cedron Jones at the State Library in about 2000 and edited by Cedron at the Montana Wilderness Association in 2007. It was created in 2013 at the State Library by Gerry Daumiller by revising the old layer to make it conform with the Geographic Names Information System and decisions made by the BGN.
This data was created to make the map at https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Documents/Maps/Individual/20131230_684_MtnRanges.pdf and the "tallest peak per range" list at https://msl.mt.gov/geoinfo/geography/geography_facts/montanaxs_tallest_peaks_by_mountain_range
