Abstract:

These data were removed from the State Library web site in June 2016 because they had been incorporated into a newer data set that covers the entire river. See the State Library's Yellowstone Clearinghouse for the more recent data.

An Historic Channel Modification Inventory for the years 1954, 1973 and 1999 was prepared for the upper Yellowstone River from Gardiner, Montana to Springdale, Montana in 2001 and 2002 to support the cumulative effects investigation sponsored by the Governor's Upper Yellowstone River Task Force. The 1954 and 1973 data are avaialable separately from the Montana State Library Yellowstone Clearinghouse.

Starting with a physical features inventory conducted in April, 1998 by the USDA NRCS and Montana DEQ, 1999 aerial photos of the channel from Gardiner to Springdale were viewed in stereo and a variety of adjustments were made to features identifiable as barbs or jetties, riprap, and dikes: some features were reclassified; spatial extent of features were reduced or extended as appropriate, and new features were added. Other features identified in the original inventory (photo points, irrigation diversions, etc.) were deleted. Additional information used to supplement interpretation of the 1999 photos included field notes and mapping done in August and September 2000 and 2001, and topographic mapping done in support of the project.

This layer was created to support the Geomorphology Investigation sponsored by the Governor's Upper Yellowstone River Task Force.

Attribute accuracy report:

The accuracy of the channel modification data is dependent on the photography used to capture the data. One-meter pixel resolution, black and white, orthophotos at a scale of 1:12,000, were prepared for the channel corridor between Gardiner and Springdale by U.S. Forest Service, Region 1, Geospatial Data Section. Higher resolution (0.2 meter pixel resolution) 1:8,000 scale, black and white and 1:6,000 scale color (Carters Bridge to Livingston) orthophotos were provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers (contractor Surdex) along with supporting digital terrain models and topographic contours.

Completeness report:

Channel and floodplain modification inventory data set is complete as of the aerial photography date (4/11/99).

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:

The 1999 data sets meet the National Map Accuracy Standards for 100 feet per inch horizontal mapping.
