Abstract:

The Montana Schools Database is comprised of public and private schools within the state of Montana. This includes colleges and universities.

The overall source for the school information came from the Directory of Montana Schools 2003-2004, published by the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI). FEMA HAZUS data was used for school attributes. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was used for positional data. The FEMA data source is derived from the National Center for Education Statistics with address range geocoding applied to derive positions. Other miscellaneous sources included the internet: whitepages.com, yellowpages.com, privatebug.org, myaasite.com/programs/schools/county, and greatschools.net/modperl/bycity/mt.

These are the original version of the data that were served by the State Library from 2004-2015. This version was removed in 2015 in favor of a version without time-sensitive contact information fields.

Creation of this data was made possible through funding from the Montana Homeland Security Taskforce GIS Subcommittee. The database was created by the Montana Base Map Service Center with assistance from the Montana USGS Mapping Partnership Office in Bozeman. Certain existing data from the GNIS and Hazus databases were used to intially populate the database

Locations of the schools were moved from the original GNIS locations to identifiable locations on digital orthorectified images, or when that wasn't feasible moved into identifiable parcels from the Montana Cadastral Database. Further spatial adjustment will take place as high resolution imagery is available
