Abstract:
This data shows the areas of interest of Montana's Watershed Groups. A Watershed Group is an organization recognized by the Montana Watershed Coordination Council (MWCC) and defined as a membership group with inclusive participation and decision-making, working within a local watershed context to address tangible natural resource issues or interests.
The group boundaries were determined by the State Library according to information about the groups available on the MWCC web site at https://www.mtwatersheds.org/, the individual group web sites, or other on-line documents about the groups. Most of the group areas were created as aggregates of US Natural Resources Conservation Service 6th-code subwatersheds.

Data Quality Information:
Logical consistency report:
Watershed group areas are not mutually exclusive. There are cases where two or more watershed groups cover exactly the same area and there are cases where the areas covered by two or more watershed groups overlap. Some areas of Montana are not covered by watershed groups.
Completeness report:
This data contains areas for Watershed Groups recognized by the Montana Watershed Coordinating Committee in January of 2008. The State Library formerly had a Watershed Group layer created in approximately the year 2000 that has a different list of groups. When the Library created the current data set, it also attempted to more accurately depict the boundaries of the old groups. The old group layer and the new layer that shows the boundaries of all the groups are available on request.

Process step:
Obtain a list of watershed groups from the MWCC web site and look for descriptions of their areas of interest on the MWCC site and any other source available on the Internet. Select 6th-code sub-watersheds representing the area from the NRCS Watershed Boundary Database and/or digitize other areas to approximate the areas of interest.

This is a description of the region the State Library selected to represent the watershed group area. Where the words "sub-basin", "watershed", or "sub-watershed" are used, these refer to entities from the NRCS Watershed Boundary Database (WBD). Where the word "part" or "drainage" is used, the Library felt that part of the watershed group boundary was not shown in the WBD, and part of the boundary was taken from another source or drawn by hand.
