      <abstract>Species presence/absence data from the MDT Noxious Weed Inventory were used to create maps that predict the probability of occurrence for selected noxious weed species observed along MDT rights-of-way in Montana.  The models used to create these maps were built using a general linear regression model and geographic information system software (GIS).  The models were based upon correlations with environmental variables such as precipitation, growing degree days, land use and elevation.  Our goal was to create maps that would be useful to land managers for understanding noxious weed species distributions and for strategically surveying for new populations.

Data are available for the following noxious weed species:
Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)
Common crupina (Crupina vulgaris)
Common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica)
Diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa)
Field bindweed (Convolulus arvensis)
Houndstounge (Cynoglossum officinale)
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula)
Meadow hawkweed (Hieracium pratense)
Orange hawkweed (Hieracium aurantiacum)
Oxeye daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum)
Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens)
Spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa)
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Sulfur cinquefoil (Potentilla recta)
Tall buttercup (Ranunculus acris)
Whitetop (Cardaria chalepensis,C. pubescens and C. draba)
</abstract>
      <purpose>Land managers need to know where weed populations are, and also if these populations are changing in density or extent throughout the landscape.  Not all populations will increase at the same rate so measurements need to be taken to determine which populations in which environments are more to less invasive. Armed with this information, managers would be able to prioritize their noxious weed management.  While it will never be possible to manage all noxious weed species or all populations of a specific noxious weed species, these models can aid in prioritizing the management of those populations that pose the greatest threat to agriculture, wildlands, roadsides or the management goals.</purpose>
