      <abstract>These are Black and White visible-band orthophotos showing two disconnected reaches of the Yellowstone River in Park County.  The upper reach runs approximately 20 miles from Gardiner north to the US 89 Bridge, and the lower reach runs about 16 miles from a point about 6 miles northeast of Livingston to a point 2.75 miles east of the county line.  The photos were taken on April 11, 1999 and the pixel resolution is 2 feet.</abstract>
      <purpose>These orthophotos were created as part of a multi-agency flood plain study of the Upper Yellowstone River, extending along approximately 80 miles of the river.  Partners include the US Army Corps of Engineers, USDA Forest Service Northern Region and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.</purpose>

This data set contains a series of twenty digital orthophotos that follow the course of the Yellowstone River, extending from approximately four miles north of Springdale, Montana, to Gardiner, Montana.  We used six strips of  24000 black and white photography flown parallel with the river and oriented the orthophotos along the axis of flight.  Each orthophoto measures 13200 feet in X and 27250 feet in Y and overlaps the next in sequence by a minimum of two thousand feet.  Significant overlap occurs between strips.  The orthophotos are in the Montana State Plane South Zone coordinate system, 1927 North America Datum.  Each digital image is in Tagged Image File Format, approximately 200 MB in size, and has a two foot ground resolution.</supplinf>

    <complete>All Upper Yellowstone orthophotos were derived from mosaicking multiple images within each of six strips of photography using Intergraph's Modular GIS Environment/ImageStation Imager (MGE/ISI-1) software.  Final orthophotos were extracted from the mosaicked images to fit the required extents.  Nineteen of twenty orthophotos have 100 percent coverage while orthophoto 6A has approximately 98 percent coverage.  The sliver of missing coverage falls over one mile from the Yellowstone River along the eastern edge of the ortho, but does not effect the intended study area.  Each orthophoto  within a strip overlaps adjacent orthophotos by a minimum of two thousand feet.  Each strip overlaps adjacent strips by a significant and variable amount that allows for ease of transition.  All orthophotos are cloud free but may include minor areas of snow cover.</complete>

        <horizpar>Horizontal and vertical control came from USGS 24000 scale quadrangles primarily using clearly defined road intersections and road/stream intersections and map spot elevations respectively.  Aerotriangulation occurred on a Wild BC3 Stereo Analytical Plotter with residuals averaging +/- 15 feet horizontal and +/- 18 feet vertical.  Absolute orientation of the images on the Intergraph CLIX 6887 ImageStation met the given control with average residuals of +/- 2 feet horizontal and +/- 1.5 feet vertical.</horizpar>

1:24000 scale black and white photography was flown specifically for this project on April 11, 1999.  Six strips of photography were flown parallel to the river course for a total of 91 images, using a Jena LMK 15/2323 camera with a calibrated focal length of 152.258mm.  Film diapositives were scanned at 21 microns on a Zeiss/Intergraph precision image scanner and delivered as JPEG encoded 8 bit raster files.

Eighty-five film diapositives were bridged on a Wild BC3 Stereo Analytical Plotter in the Montana State Plane South Zone (2503), National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 and (Horizontal) 1927 North American Datum.  Map control was transferred to three pugged passpoints per photo oriented in the standard aerotriangulation passpoint configuration.

DTM collection on seventy seven JPEG encoded models occurred on an Intergraph CLIX 6887 ImageStation using a combination of automatic data collection and manual point collection within Intergraph's ImageStation DTM Collection (ISDC) software.  The DTMs were collected on a 100 foot grid without breaklines.  Individual model DTMs were merged to create a single strip DTM and output to a triangulated irregular network (*.TTN) file.  The TTN file, in concert with projected Intergraph design (*.dgn) files, were used to orthorectify selected 8 bit images, typically every other image in a strip.  We used the  Cubic Convolution Interpolation Method  to resample the images and output was as JPEG, tiled, compressed files.

Orthophotos were visually matched for color and brightness and individual orthophotos were mosaicked together.  The JPEG files were then converted to Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) files.  All sheet collars, created  in design file format, were output as DWG files and also imported into ARC for conversion to ARC coverages.  The TIFF files were then registered to their corresponding ARC coverages and world files created.</procdesc>
