Abstract Organized in the 1930's as a response to the severe erosion problems of the "Dust Bowl" days, Montana's 58 conservation districts are political subdivisions of the state, governed by a board supervisors. Funding for the operation and conservation activities of each district comes from a small mill levy on real property within the boundaries of the district. Conservation districts help citizens conserve their soil, water, and other renewable natural resources.
Purpose The conservation district data will be used for properly assessing taxes (mills) for local conservation districts. This has turned into a problem in some of Montana's larger cities that have encountered urban sprawl. When comparing current city limit boundaries with the city limit boundaries when the CD was created, CDs can utilize Cadastral information to determine mistakes made in the County tax preparation to property owners. Many assessors have mistakenly removed conservation district mill levies from city lands annexed after the conservation district was formed when only city limit boundaries at the time conservation districts were formed should be excluded (if the city is not completely included in the conservation district boundary).
