Abstract This is a collection of 2,107 PDF files that contain maps, 36 by 33 inches, that show the geography used by the U.S. Census Bureau to collect the 2000 Census in Montana. The maps were stored from 2000 until 2007 on the State Library web site for download from the Census and Economic Information Center's web page that was at http://ceic.mt.gov/centract_maps/centract_ctyblockmaps.aspThese large-scale, county-based maps show the greatest detail of any of the Census 2000 map types. Each map set consists of: 1) an index map sheet showing parent and inset map sheet coverage within a given county; 2) one or more parent sheets at one of 11 standard scales, depending on the area/size and shape of the county and the density of the block pattern; 3) and inset sheet or sheets, as needed, for densely-settled areas. The parent and inset map sheets display Census codes and boundaries for blocks and census tracts/block numbering areas (BNAs), as well as Federal Information Processing Standards codes and Census codes (in that order), boundaries, and boundary names for places and/or county subdivisions. Block groups consist of all those blocks within a census tract that have the same first digit. The map also shows streets, roads and other features, such as railroads, streams, and lakes, and their names.Index map sheet and other aids: The index sheet shows how the county is divided by map sheet. The large numbers on the index sheet identify the parent sheets; the shaded areas identify densely developed areas that require maps of a larger scale. These are inset map sheets, usually identified by letters. Some inset areas may require multiple map sheets and these, too, are numbered on the index map sheet. Those who need only a portion of a county can purchase the index sheet to identify which parent sheets and insets to order. In addition, a map legend appears on each map sheet. The key to adjacent sheets identifies the number of the adjoining parent sheets (or the lack of an adjacent sheet) and acts as a further guide in assembling the map sheets in the correct sequence. As of the year 2015, maps similar to these were still available on the Census web site at http://www2.census.gov/geo/maps/blk2000
Purpose These maps were used by Census field workers for data collection and were provided to the public for identification of the Census Blocks that were listed in Census 2000 population tables.
