Montana Wastewater Discharge Permits, 2000

Data Provider Montana Department of Environmental Quality
Date 10/31/2000
Content Type Offline Data
Abstract These data show the locations of and basic information about Montana Pollutant Discharge Elimination system (MPDES) permits. The data were compiled from Montana Water Protection Bureau files in the year 2000. The data were available from the Montana State Library Digital Atlas application from 2001 through 2014.All point sources of wastewater discharge are required to obtain and comply with MPDES permits. The effluent limitations and other conditions for certain categories of wastewaters are required to be treated to federally-specified minimum levels based on available and achievable water treatment technologies. Additonally, effluent limits and permit conditions are established to protect beneficial uses and applicable water quality standards.Facilities with active MPDES permits were obtained from the DEQ permit database. DEQ permit paper files were searched to obtain maps showing locations, and latitudes and longitudes were obtained using an ArcView application developed by the Natural Resource Information Service of the Montana State Library. Latitudes and longitudes were estimated from Township/Range/Section/Tract information in paper files if maps were not available. Experience of DEQ personnel were relied on to locate facilities where no location information was available in DEQ paper files.Permits are included for industrial and mining storm water discharges; industrial discharge of processed water, cooling water and mine drainage; combined animal feeding operations (CAFOs); and municipal facilities such as wastewater treatment plants and water treatment plants.Combined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) must have permits if animals are stabled, confined, fed or maintained for a total of 45 days or more in any 12-month period, and crops, vegetation forage growth, or post-harvest residues are not sustained in the normal growing season over any portion of a facility.
Purpose The goal of the Montana Pollutant Discharge Elimination system (MPDES) program is to control point source discharges of wastewater such that water quality in state surface water is protected.
