Abstract This dataset contains imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). These data are digital aerial photos of the state of Montana, taken in 2023 and 2024. The compressed county mosaics were downloaded from the NRCS geospatial data gateway. The FTP folder containing these images is: https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/Imagery/2023_NAIP/UTM_County_Mosaics The data are available from the State Library as a collection of 11,776 4-band (near infrared, red, green, and blue) TIFF images in UTM coordinates. An ESRI shapefile index showing the extent and acquisition dates of the TIF images is available at: https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/Imagery/2023_NAIP/NAIP2023_p2024_TileIndex_shp.zipThe 2023 acquisition was not completed in 2023. The rest of the state was flown in 2024. An ESRI shapefile showing the seamlines with the image dates is available at: https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/Imagery/2023_NAIP/NAIP2023_p2024_ImageDates.zipThe Montana State Library has not received the 2024 NAIP GeoTiffs at present. The MSL used the software program GeoExpress to extract GeoTiffs from the NRCS compressed county mosaics. These GeoTiffs were used to create a statewide mosaic of the 2023 and 2024 NAIP imagery in order to publish an image service. The 2023 NAIP image service with the provisional 2024 NAIP is now available from the following REST endpoint: https://gisservicemt.gov/arcgis/rest/services/MSDI_Framework/msdi_naip2023_provisional_image_v1/ImageServer The NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental U.S. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availability of ortho imagery within one year of acquisition. The NAIP provides 60 centimeter ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery rectified to a horizontal accuracy within /- 4 meters of reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQs) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP) or from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 300 pixel buffer on all four sides. The NAIP imagery is formatted to the UTM coordinate system using the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile. This file was generated by compressing NAIP imagery that cover the county extent. Two types of compression may be used for NAIP imagery: MrSID and JPEG 2000. The target value for the compression ratio is 40:1 for imagery. The data are available from the State Library in two different formats. The most accessible format is a downloadable collection of compressed county mosaic (CCM) 4-Band MrSID images. NAIP 3.75 minute tile file names are based on the USGS quadrangle naming convention. To order TIFF images from the State Library, select the quadrangles you want from the tiff index shapefile and send them to the Library, along with a storage device of sufficient size to hold them and return postage for the device.
