Abstract:

Montana Census Blocks for the 2000 Census, with a subset of population data from the PL94-171 redistricting database.

The Montana Census and Economic Information Center imported the TIGER/Line files to a series of ESRI shapefiles for each Montana County using TGR2SHP version 4.1 (GIS Tools, Knoxville, TN).

The Montana State Library converted the data to Montana State Plane Coordinates and joined the census block files to PL 94-171 population counts using Arc/Info software from ESRI of Redlands, CA, and combined the county files as a single statewide dataset.

Attributes were copied directly from the U.S. Census Bureau TIGER and PL94-171 databases. Discussion of the accuracy of the Census are beyond the scope of this document.

This is a complete database of Montana's Census Blocks for the 2000 Census

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:

The block boundary coordinates are mostly from 1:100,000 scale maps. These maps have an approximate accuracy of 51 meters, or 170 feet.

Process step:

The Montana Census and Economic Information Center (CEIC) converted the native TIGER/Line files into a number of separate ESRI shapefiles for each Montana county. CEIC used the TGR2SHP version 4.0 (GIS Tools, Knoxville, TN) to convert the files. As the software did not yet contain a TIGER 2000 conversion option, the TIGER 99 option was used.

The Montana State Library, Natural Resource Information System, converted all the shapefiles to Arc/Info coverage format, projected them to Montana State Plane Coordinates with Arc/Info, and joined the Census Block data to the population counts. The individual county files were then combined into a single state-wide data set.
