Abstract:
Montana Census Blocks for the 2010 Census, with a subset of population data from the PL94-171 redistricting database.
The Census Block boundary TIGER/Line Shapefiles are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB).
Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and/or by nonvisible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Census blocks are relatively small in area; for example, a block in a city bounded by streets. However, census blocks in remote areas are often large and irregular and may even be many square miles in area.
A common misunderstanding is that data users think census blocks are used geographically to build all other census geographic areas, rather all other census geographic areas are updated and then used as the primary constraints, along with roads and water features, to delineate the tabulation blocks. As a result, all 2010 Census blocks nest within every other 2010 Census geographic area, so that Census Bureau statistical data can be tabulated at the block level and aggregated up to the appropriate geographic areas. Blocks are the smallest geographic areas for which the Census Bureau publishes data from the decennial census.

The TIGER/Line Shapefile products are not copyrighted however TIGER/Line and Census TIGER are registered trademarks of the U.S. Census Bureau. These products are free to use in a product or publication, however acknowledgement must be given to the U.S. Census Bureau as the source.
The boundary information in the TIGER/Line Shapefiles are for statistical data collection and tabulation purposes only; their depiction and designation for statistical purposes does not constitute a determination of jurisdictional authority or rights of ownership or entitlement and they are not legal land descriptions.Coordinates in the TIGER/Line shapefiles have six implied decimal places, but the positional accuracy of these coordinates is not as great as the six decimal places suggest.

Process step:
Import the PL94-171 text files into the Microsoft Access database provided by the Census Bureau. Write a query to pull the desired fields from the Census table into a new table and create a GeoID10 field from the State, County, Tract, and block fields:
SELECT geo.LogRecNo,
geo.[State] geo.[County] geo.[Tract] geo.[Block] AS GeoID10,
PL1.P0010001, PL1.P0010002, PL1.P0010003, PL1.P0010004, PL1.P0010005,
PL1.P0010006, PL1.P0010007, PL1.P0010008, PL1.P0010009, PL1.P0020002,
PL2.P0030001, PL2.H0010001, PL2.H0010002
INTO Census_Blocks
FROM (Mtgeo2010 as geo
INNER JOIN PL_Part1 as PL1 ON Mtgeo2010.LogRecNo = PL_Part1.LOGRECNO)
INNER JOIN PL_Part2 as PL2 ON Mtgeo2010.LogRecNo = PL_Part2.LOGRECNO
WHERE geo.SumLev = 750;
Process date:
03/16/2010
Process step:
Project the shapefile to Montana State Plane Coordinates. Load the shapefile and the new table from the Access database into ArcMap and join them on the GeoID10 field. Select the desired output fields and export the data to a new shapefile. Add the acres and density fields and calculate the acreage and population density.
