Abstract:

This layer represents individual trees for the City of Red Lodge. The majority of trees were mapped using photogrammetric methods by Fugro Horizons, Inc. using a 2007, 0.5 foot resolution digtial orthophotograph of Red Lodge. The remaining trees were mapped in 2008 using DGPS as part of a public tree inventory which assigned attributes like tree species, DBH, canopy cover, condition, etc to over 2100 public trees.

Purpose:

This dataset is a geographical representation of trees for the City of Red Lodge. The data are intended to be used for mapping or analysis in conjuction with the City of Red Lodge Urban Forest Management Plan.

These data are complete for the area covering the incorporated city limits of Red Lodge. Individual trees were not mapped in areas of dense canopy. Instead, another GIS layer was developed which outlines "groups" of trees. Tree attributes are only complete for trees located on public areas (i.e., city-owned land, parks, street right-of-ways).

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:

Horizontal accuracy meets National Map Accuracy Standards: 90% of all planimetric features, which are well defined on the photographs, will be plotted so that their position on the finished maps will be accurate to within 1/30th of 1" from their true location at final map scale (1:1200)

Vertical positional accuracy report:

Vertical accuracy meets National Map Accuracy Standards: 90% of all contours will be within 1/2 contour interval (2 feet) except where obscured, and the remaining 10% of such elevations will be within one contour interval exept where obscured.

This orthophoto served as the base map for photogrammetric mapping of thematic layers. The orthophoto pixel resolution was 0.5 feet.

Process step:

This layer was initially produced by Fugro Horizons, Inc. using photogrammetic mapping methods. Stereomodels of aerial imagery were viewed in 3-D for the compilation of map features. GIS technicians prepared the final map file in AutoCAD 2000 format.

The City of Red Lodge converted the layer from AutoCAD 2000 format to ArcGIS format and transformed the layer from a local coordinate system to UTM/NAD83 projection.

Process step:

In 2008, the City of Red Lodge received funding from DNRC to conduct a tree inventory. The objective of this inventory was to collect and analyze information on "public" trees within the corporate limits of Red Lodge (i.e., trees on city and county-owned property including parks and street right-of-ways). The inventory did not evaluate trees planted on private property. The inventory recorded tree species, location, diameter, condition (including immediate safety hazards) and recommended maintenance and replacement needs. The inventory began in June 2008 and was completed in August of the same year. A total of 2,137 trees were inventoried. Data were collected using DGPS methods and transferred to the tree GIS database. For more information about the inventory, refer to the City of Red Lodge, Urban Forest Management Plan.
