Abstract:

This layer shows the location of permits issued in Montana from 1990 through 2003 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA). Section 404 requires permits for "any activity that involves discharge, or placement of dredged or fill material into the waters of the United States, including wetlands".

Each record in the layer represents a location where work is authorized by a permit. One permit may be represented in the data by a number of records showing where work is authorized.

Data in this layer include all PERMITTED projects between 1990 and September 2003. The Corps receives many permit applications that are not granted, these are not included in this layer.

The location of 360 of the records in the layer are not known. These records were placed on the Kansas-Nebraska boundary at -100 longitue, 40 latitude and have a LOCATION value of "No".

The data were provided to the State Library in 2003 by the Helena Regulatory office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The State Library made the data available to the public from 2003-2014 through its Digital Atlas application.
