Abstract:
This archive contains GIS data extracted from Montana's 1992 U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line files. There is a separate data set for each of Montana's counties. The State Library converted the TIGER text files into ESRI coverage format data in Montana State Plane coordinates in 1996. For the purpose of archiving the data in an easier-to-use format, the data were converted to ESRI shapefile format in 2015.

TIGER files are spatial extracts from the Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER database, containing features such as roads, railroads, streams, lakes, powerlines, pipelines, landmarks, boundaries, and legal and statistical geographic areas. TIGER is an acronym for Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing. The main data source for the TIGER files of this era were paper 1:100,000 scale U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps.

Each county has a shapefile for line features, a shapefile for polygon features, a dBase file containing alternate feature names, and an ESRI e00 text file containing the ESRI coverage-format data from 1996.
