Montana Indian Population Density map
Abstract:
American Indians per square mile in Montana, 1990. Derived from U.S. Census Bureau 1990 TIGER files and population counts. The original data was smoothed, and the highest resulting density in each 1-kilometer grid cell was assigned to the cell.

Source scale denominator:

Source contribution:
This is the source of the population counts per Census Block that formed the numerator of the population densities.
Calendar date:

Process step:
Convert 57 Montana TIGER files to Arc/Info format, dissolve polygons to create Census Blocks, and relate Census Block numbers to the Public Law 94-171 files.
Process date:
10/12/1991
Process step:
Convert the 57 Census Block coverages to 100m grid cells based on density of Indian population. Set the value of each cell to be the mean value of its 81 nearest neighbors.
Arc/Info command: s2 = focalmean (s1,rectangle,9,9)
Process date:
07/07/1994
Process step:
Assign each cell the density of the highest of the 81 nearby cells. Arc/Info command: s3 = focalmax (s2,rectangle,9,9)
Process date:
07/07/1994
Process step:
Resample the data from 100 meter resolution to 1000.
Arc Info commands: setcell 1000, s4 = s3.
Join the 57 counties into a single data set with the "merge" command.
