Abstract:
Montana Incorporated Cities and Towns
Purpose:
This dataset is a geographical representation of incorporated city and town boundaries in the State of Montana published in 2018. The data are intended to be used for the mapping or analysis of said boundaries.
Supplemental information:
The Montana Incorporated Cities and Towns file geodatabase dataset represent Montana's incorporated city and town boundaries. The Montana State Library and the MSDI supports a federated database approach to all MSDI layers. Montana defines a federated approach as a method that supports the integration and utilization of data from multiple data providers, while retaining the primary maintenance responsibility with the provider. Most of Montana's framework data model efforts have adopted a federated approach that leverages multiple data providers and thus multiple data maintainers. The boundary files were created based on the best available source data received the Montana Department of Transportation's Fuel Tax Layer and County/City Government's GIS Programs. The Fuel Tax layer was adjusted to the most current version of the Montana GCDB and Cadastral Parcels. Digital data used as a base layer to adjust these boundary files were the best available source at the time: Cadastral (parcel lines), Geographic Coordination Data Base (GCDB), National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) Imagery, US Census Places Data. Incorporated City and Town Class/Type information was taken from the Directory of Montana Municipal Officials published by the Montana League of Cities and Towns (208 N. Montana Avenue Suite 201 Helena, MT 59624), August 2009. It is plausible that errors do exist and we welcome all corrections. If you do have a correction to a boundary please contact the Administrative Boundaries Data Coordinator.
