Abstract:
This layer was created in 1999 at the State Library based on maps provided by Tom Ring of the Montana Major Facility Siting Bureau. The layer shows the general location of refined products and crude oil pipelines in Montana. These data should be used for reference only. The data were digitized by hand from transparent sheets made for overlay on 1:250,000 scale maps. At this scale, a drawing error of 1 millimeter on the maps or a similar error in digitizing the map would create an error of 820 feet on the ground. It is unlikely that the people who drew the maps had tools that would allow placement of the pipelines within a millimeter of their correct locations.
For access to current pipeline data, please see the National Pipeline Mapping System at https://www.npms.phmsa.dot.gov/
The layer does not show every refined products and crude oil pipeline in Montana. It only shows pipelines from maps that were provided and available from DEQ. Also, several potential pipelines were in the planning stage but not approved at the completion date of this layer.
The Yellowstone Pipeline Company has the Bitterroot Range Project but no decision will be made until Spring or Summer 2000. The digital data exists on CDs in the Geospatial Metadata For Baseline Data Collection notebook prepared by Maxim Technologies, Inc, Helena, Montana, revised August 1998.
One pipeline that has been contructed but is not included in this data set is the Front Range Pipeline owned by CENEX, Inc.
Purpose:
The layer was created for the Department of Environmental Quality Source Water Protection Program to be used to find potential sources of contamination from refined products and crude oil pipelines.

Other citation details:
Also used 8.5 x 11 photocopy of pipeline by Lost Boy Creek. This was provided by Tom Ring of DEQ.

Process step:
The Fuels Transmission and Production mylars are digitized by a DNRC intern working for Tom Ring.
Process date:
1990
Process step:
The process of attributing the line work from the mylars begins at NRIS. An attempt to attribute all of the line work is made, this includes all the natural gas pipelines which is the majority of the linework.
Process date:
08/12/1999
Process step:
Generate maps for checking line work coding
Process date:
09/16/1999
Process step:
Go over check maps and Problem Action Report with Tom Ring. He provides some answers. He also provides more maps for digitizing pipelines contructed since the early 1980s.
Process date:
09/20/1999
Process step:
Using the sources provided by Tom Ring - F, G, H, and J, onscreen digitizing was done in both ArcView and ArcEdit, using the following sources - B, C, D, E, and I, as guides to place the pipeline coordinates while onscreen digitizing.
Process date:
10/19/1999
Process step:
These new lines were attributed.
Process date:
1999
Process step:
A subset of pipelines was selected from the lines digitized and attributed from the mylars. This subset contained just the pipelines that were not attributed as natural gas.
Process date:
1999
Process step:
The subset pipelines and the new pipelines provided by Tom Ring and digitized by NRIS were put together as one layer called pipeoil.
