The layer includes every town in Montana that has a library, plus any Census Designated Places that are isolated towns. Census Designated Places that represent suburbs or regions larger than an individual town are excluded from the layer. For Census Designated Places, the populations are the official 1990 Census figures for those places. The exceptions to this are Butte and Anaconda, for which the populations are for the built-up areas of the towns rather than for the consolidated city/county Census Designated Places. For other places, the 1990 population was estimated by selecting the 1990 Census Blocks that seemed to constitute the place and adding their 1990 populations.
