    <descript>
This data set contains hydrologic unit boundaries at the Watershed (5th-Code) level. The data set was developed by delineating the boundary lines on 1:100,000 scale base maps or overlays and digitizing the delineated lines. 5th-code number assignment is subject to change in 4th-code units that span state boundaries as final 5th-code boundaries are developed for North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. This dataset is distributed with a companion layer dissolved from it, called Subbasin_1999, that contains the 4th-code sub-basins.
      <purpose>The watershed hydrologic unit boundary provides a uniquely identified and uniform method of subdividing large drainage areas. These smaller sized hydrologic units (approximately 40,000 to 250,000 acres) are useful in many programs supported by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and others.</purpose>

    <complete>The data is complete for the state of Montana. Meets national USDA NRCS specifications for the delineation of 5th-Code watersheds. Further delineation at the Sub-watershed (6th-code) level will be completed on an as-needed basis to meet USDA NRCS mission objectives. Sub-watersheds (10,000 to 40,000 acres) will be delineated using a base map scale of 1:24,000. The Subwatershed coverage will meet specifications as set forth in Natural Resources Conservation Service National Instruction 170-304 (revised).</complete>

      <horizpa>
        <horizpar>The approximate horizontal accuracy of the base maps is 51 meters, assuming they meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The accuracy of the watershed maps is generally based on contour information available for the base maps. Such data may be supplemented with site visits to locate ridge lines for hydrologic unit boundaries in flat terrain areas or to identify changes in drainage patterns due to human or geologic activity. The difference in positional accuracy between the hydrologic unit boundaries and their digitized map locations is unknown.

Hydrologic unit boundaries generally were digitized to be within 0.01 inches of their locations on the digitizing source (25 meters on the ground). The digital map elements are edge matched against the data for the adjacent quadrangle. Edge match locations generally do not deviate from centerline to centerline by more than 0.01 inches.
