    <descript>
This geodatabase contains features of the U.S. National Grid (USNG) for the area around Montana. The USNG_Polygons and USNG_Borders feature classes contain the USNG Grid Zones and 100,000-meter named grid squares and their borders. The USNG_Lines feature class contains 1000-meter grid lines. In addition to these three substantive feature classes, the geodatabase contains two ArcMap mxd documents that illustrate the use of layers. One document is a statewide map showing the grid zones and the names of the grid squares. The other document shows a small area at the intersection of four grid zones and the two-digit easting and northing values of the 1000-meter grid lines. The geodatabase contains a Montana county line layer and an image of a USGS 1:100,000 scale map to support the mxd documents.
      <purpose>For display of the U.S. National Grid on maps whose area covers more than one USNG Grid Zone. At the time of the creation of this data, there were no automated programs that could do this. The layer is also used by the State Library's on-line Topofinder application to determine USNG grid square IDs for its display of USNG coordinates.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Rectangular grids of lines were automatically generated as Arc/Info coverages in UTM coordinates, and the x-coordinate, y-coordinate, and line type values were assigned to the lines. The lines were densified to a 1-kilometer interval so that the line intersections would convert to the correct locations when the data were projected to State Plane coordinates.

The grids were clipped with lines defining the UTM zone boundaries, and the lines in each grid outside its zone were removed. The grids were combined into a single coverage and projected to State Plane Coordinates.

The lines from the combined coverage that define the USNG grid squares were selected from the grid coverage and saved in a separate coverage.
All of these steps were performed by an Arc Macro Language program called makegrids.aml, which is included in the geodatabase distribution zip file.</procdesc>
