The data were created to be coincident with the Montana Cadastral Parcel Boundaries. Where county boundaries are coincident with public land survey section lines, they were copied from the Montana CadNSDI Public Land Survey System database. If boundaries were not coincident with CadNSDI lines, they were digitized on screen from 1:24,000 scale Geological Survey Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs). County Boundaries will change as the CadNSDI is adjusted. These data were adjusted to the newest CadNSDI on September 1, 2014. The archived geodatabase contains two feature classes. The County feature class contains the county polygons with attribute information about the counties. The CadNSDI data were derived from the BLM Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB) and the county lines were originally selected from the GCDB. The CadNSDI is a successor to the GCDB and is now the source for adjustments to data that follow Public Land Survey lines. U.S. Geological Survey Helena, MT Montana State Library County lines that do not follow Public Land Survey lines were screen-digitized from these images. County boundaries coincident with PLSS lines were copied from GCDB data downloaded from the Montana State BLM Office. The boundaries that are not coincident with PLSS, rivers and other topographic features, were on screen digitized from USGS 1:24,000 scale Digital Raster Graphics. Discrepencies were researched when encountered, however this is not meant to represent a legal survey of Montana county boundaries 2003 County boundaries based on Public Land Survey System lines that have been adjusted in the CadNSDI database were adjusted to be coincident with those lines. 20140901 County2015 OBJECTID Database sequence number SHAPE Feature coordinates NAME County name. SQMILES Area of the county in square miles PERIMETER Length of the county perimeter in miles ACRES Area of the county in acres ALLFIPS Federal Information Processing Standard State/County code. This uniquely identifies a county in the United States and consists of Montana's state code of 30 followed by the three-digit county FIPS code. FIPS Federal Information Processing Standard three-digit code number of the county. The numbers are odd numbers assigned in ascendinng order with the counties sorted alphabetically by name. ORIG_FID Database sequence ID preserved from an earlier version of the data LAST_UPDATE GLOBALID SHAPE_Length Length of the feature perimeter in meters SHAPE_Area Area of the feature in square meters CountyLines2015 OBJECTID Database sequence number SHAPE Feature coordinates NAME Name of county. Every boundary appears in the dataset twice, once for the county on either side of it.
