Planimetric features from the Yellowstone River project collected from air photos of 2004 are represented by photogrammetrically compiled lines, points, and polygons and are stored in feature classes derived from the SDSFIE data design standard. The design file prefix for each entity class name was used for the geodatabase feature class name.

The data is split into four ESRI personal geodatabase files, one each for Dawson and Stillwater Counties and one each for the east and west halves of Yellowstone County. The download size of each database is between 219 and 290 megabytes in size.

The geodatabases contain the following feature classes and subclasses:
BGGEN -- Building polygons
 -- Existing Structure
 -- Concrete Slab
 -- Courtyard within existing structures
COEQP -- Communications Equipment -- Radio Towers
FPGEN -- Future Project Sites
GDSRV -- Areas where ground is obscured by vegetation
HYLIN -- Hydrography Lines
 -- Surface Water Course Drain
 -- Ditch Aqueduct Centerline
 -- Surface Water Course Centerline
HYSUR -- Hydrography Polygons
 -- Surface Water Body
 -- Surface Water Course
 -- Canal Area
HSUR_FALL -- Fall River Edge
IMFDC -- Improvement Flood Control
 -- Dam Centerline
 -- Levee Centerline
LFHYPC -- Topographic and Bathymetric Contours
 -- Intermediate (1-meter interval, 0.5-meter bathymetric)
 -- Index (5-meter interval, 2.5-meter bathymetric)
 -- Intermediate Depression Contour
 -- Index Depression Contour
-- Intermediate Contour Hidden under a structure
-- Index Contour Hidden under a structure
-- Approximate Intermediate Contour in an obscured area
-- Approximate Index Contour in an obscured area
-- Approximate Intermediate Depression Contour in an obscured area

<purpose>This coverage was created as part of a joint Yellowstone River Conservation Districts Council and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District cumulative impacts study of the Yellowstone River channel and floodplain. The multi-agency interdisciplinary planning study extends 477 river miles from Sweetgrass County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota. It is specifically intended to support the hydraulic, geomorphic, biologic and socioeconomic analyses that are part of the planning study. The first phase of the mapping focused on Stillwater, Yellowstone and Dawson Counties in Montana and included approximately 295 square miles of floodplain.</purpose>

      <procstep>
<procdesc>The planimetric data was photogrammetrically compiled from aerial photography, using softcopy workstations. Ground control data, combined with FDAAT computations, allows for accurate orientation of the photography. Features required by the planimetric code list are compiled from the photography, stored digitally in Microstation (.dgn) files. Planimetric features are represented by linestrings, coded with attributes that identify each feature.

These files are then translated into Arc/Info coverages, where line and polygon topology is built. Finally, the coverage features are imported into the feature classes of a Personal Geodatabase.

LIDAR data was collected using Merrick's ALS40 sensor. The data was field-verified for complete coverage of the project area. Raw data files were parsed into manageable client-specific tiles. These tiles were then processed through automated filtering that separates the data into different classification groups: error points, ground points, and canopy-building points. The data was next taken into a graphic environment to reclassify the erroneous points that may remain in the LIDAR point cloud after auto filter. The surface was then normalized into a digital surface model (DSM). Final data extraction for the client's keypoint (statistically significant points) and canopy-building files were then generated.

Using orthophotography, planimetric features were compiled as breaklines to supplement the LIDAR data. The LIDAR digital surface model was then processed with the breaklines, and contour lines were interpolated. Bathymetric contours from the bathymetric survey were integrated into the data set at this time. The contours were exported from Merrick's MARS software into Microstation. The contour data was checked for spikes and holes, and then imported into Arc/Info coverages for building topology, coding contour types, and creating annotation. Finally, the coverage features are imported into the feature classes of a Personal Geodatabase.

Hypsographic contours lie outside the fall river boundary and are in one-meter intervals. Bathymetric contours, and contours on the river island areas which lie inside the fall river boundary, are in half-meter intervals.</procdesc>
