A Watershed Group is an organization recognized by the Montana Watershed Coordination Council (MWCC) and defined as a membership group with inclusive participation and decision-making, working within a local watershed context to address tangible natural resource issues or interests. The group boundaries were determined by the State Library according to information about the groups available on the MWCC web site at https://www.mtwatersheds.org/, the individual group web sites, or other on-line documents about the groups. There are cases where two or more watershed groups cover exactly the same area and there are cases where the areas covered by two or more watershed groups overlap. Some areas of Montana are not covered by watershed groups. This data contains areas for Watershed Groups recognized by the Montana Watershed Coordinating Committee in January of 2008. The State Library formerly had a Watershed Group layer created in approximately the year 2000 that has a different list of groups. When the Library created the current data set, it also attempted to more accurately depict the boundaries of the old groups. The old group layer and the new layer that shows the boundaries of all the groups are available on request.
