The database was created for the Environmental Protection Agency by the Montana Natural Heritage Program (NHP) and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. The data were referred to internally as "Ecologically Significant Sites" and "NHP High Priority Wetlands," but the reasons for the selection of these sites for this database is unclear.
