Description

Description

The description of the event.

This program centers on the topic of intellectual freedom and how it weathers a material challenge. As intellectual freedom centers on the idea of a person's ability to examine a concept from every angle, the program will discuss the value of ensuring a well-balanced collection featuring EDI materials. To ensure that the right of intellectual freedom is met for each patron, materials must include themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The program will also discuss meeting EDI concerns in regard to ensuring diverse voices have a role during a material reconsideration process within both a committee and a trustee board. As a result, this will include discussion on the value of approaching staffing and trustee recruitment with EDI in mind. Tonya and David will discuss their previous experience handling book challenges and how they worked with their trustees during the process. The presentation will include information on how the issue was handled, what Tonya and David learned, and how they would respond now if facing the same situation.

Presented by Tonya Ryals and David Eckert
