Abstract
The Montana Transportation Framework contains road centerlines, ramps, bridges, railroads, and trails, along with address ranges and road attribute tables and relationship classes. The Montana Transportation Framework program uses a federated approach to combine data from various sources and integrate them into one seamless, standardized, uniformly formatted and attributed layer. Transportation data is a dynamic framework (new, upgraded and retired roads, name changes, new address ranges, etc.) and reflecting changes in statewide GIS is a challenging task. The State Library uses the federated approach for the creation and maintenance of transportation data where each data provider (tribe, federal, state, county, city, private) manage its datasets to suit their business needs and practices. The updated transportation data (features, geometries, attributes) is then forwarded to the State Library where it undergoes standardization and quality control/assurance processes. The framework then gets updated with new data and published online. Using data from local sources assures the best possible coverage across the state and ensures the best available data is centrally available.

Purpose
The purpose of the Montana Transportation Framework is to provide an integrated, seamless layer of all Montana's roads that provides a variety of support and widespread benefit for users and organizations by supporting wildfire and other emergency response services and mitigation, resource management, road maintenance, land-use planning.
