Abstract This data is a copy of the "Montana TIGER/Line Census Files, 1990, Montana" CD, issued by the U.S. Census Bureau in August, 1991. The data are in TIGER format and must be converted by 3rd-party software for use with geographic information systems.The TIGER/Line files contain data describing three major types of features/entities; Line Features - 1) Roads 2) Railroads 3) Hydrography 4) Miscellaneous transportation features and selected power lines and pipe lines 5) Political and statistical boundariesLandmark Features - 1) Point landmarks, e.g., schools and churches. 2) Area landmarks, e.g., Parks and cemeteries. 3) Key geographic locations (KGLs), e.g., shopping centers and factories.Polygon features - 1) Geographic entity codes for areas used to tabulate the Census 1990 census statistical data 2) Locations of area landmarks 3) Locations of KGLs1990 TIGER files contain latitude/longitude geographic coordinates, in the North American Datum of 1927, of roads, streams, boundary lines derived from 1:100,000 scale maps.
Purpose These TIGER/Line files were developed by the Census Bureau and the Geological Survey to allow the Census Bureau to create maps for the collection of the 1990 Census.
Supplemental Information This data does not appear to be available for order on-line from the Census Bureau any more. The data may be converted to Arc/Info coverage format using the "1995" option of the Tiger Conversion tools in the "Coverage Tools...Conversion...To Coverage" toolset in the Arc/Info version of ESRI's ArcToolbox application.
