Abstract Mine locations and attributes from the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) Abandoned and Inactive Mines database. This data was compiled by MBMG using the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database as a basis. The information was updated during the USDA Forest Service (Region 1) and U.S. Bureau of Land Management mine inventory (conducted from 1992 to 2002). The coordinates and legal descriptions come from sources of varying accuracy. The attributes included here are a subset of those available from the MBMG database.
Purpose Identification of mine sites, locations, and attributes compiling past data with current research results. Emphasis is on those sites that have potential environmental effects on USFS-administered land.

This database relies heavily on the preceeding information from the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database. Locations are point data representing a larger area and are somewhat interpretive. Names of mine sites may change over time with differing owners. The Montana State Library provides this product/service for informational purposes only.
