MSDI Framework Administrative Boundaries
Abstract This representation of Montana's conservation district boundaries is based on boundary descriptions obtained from legal descriptions filed with the Conservation Districts Bureau of the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. This data shows the outer boundaries of the 58 districts, although there may be some land within the boundaries that are excluded from some conservation districts. For specific information, contact the local conservation district. This data was replaced in 2010 by a layer with modified boundaries for some areas that show what municipalities and areas are excluded from the districts.Conservation districts are units of local government designed to help citizens conserve their soil, water, and other renewable natural resources. In 1937, President Roosevelt encouraged all states to adopt legislation enabling the creation of local soil conservation districts. The State Montana passed legislation creating its conservation districts in 1939 to provide for local control of natural resource management programs and activities.Montana's 58 conservation districts cover all counties and include more than 70 municipalities that have petitioned to be included within district boundaries. For more information about Montana's conservation districts, see the Montana Association of Conservation Districts web site at http://www.macdnet.org.
