Abstract This is an archive copy of the underground tanks data. Current data are available from the web site of the DEQ Underground Storage Tank Program. These are regulated underground storage tanks from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Waste and Underground Tank Management Bureau's "UST-Access" database. Requirements for database tracking of Underground Storage Tank data came from the Federal Office of Underground Storage Tanks in the 1980's. The original database design was developed in Microsoft Access by the Environmental Protection Agency and was first implemented in Montana in 1997.These data were available on the Montana State Library web site from 2005 through 2011 and were updated on a weekly basis. The archive contains copies of the data set that were updated in 2005, 2006, and 2011.
Purpose The goal of the Montana Underground Storage Tank (UST) Program is to protect human health and the environment by preventing releases of petroleum and hazardous substances from UST systems. The release of these regulated products into the environment threatens groundwater resources and can cause explosive vapors to seep into confined spaces and occupied dwellings. The objectives of the UST Program are to ensure that: * UST systems are properly constructed and designed using recognized industry standards; * installations, repairs and removals are conducted and inspected by qualified, trained and licensed individuals; * active USTs are properly operated and monitored for releases; * upon closure, USTs are properly decommissioned and sites assessed for contamination. This layer was developed from the UST-Access database for public dissemination and mapping of regulated underground storage tank data.
