Abstract This is a collection of ESRI shape files that show highways, roads, lakes, streams, towns, counties, and Federal lands for Montana and the surrounding area. They were used to create the first draft of the Montana 2001-2002 Highway Map that the Departments of Commerce and Transportation distribute. These data do not portray map features in their correct locations and sizes. Their purpose is for the creation of an easily readable, attractive highway map of Montana at a scale of approximately 1:1,500,000.Many features in these data were moved as far as three miles from their correct position in order to make the map more readable or attractive. Other features are shown at many times their actual size, and most lines have been simplified and are therefore much shorter than the features they represent on the ground. The Montana 2001-2002 Highway Map has been edited by the Montana Department of Transportation since the State Library provided the data to them. The published map does not show all the features that appear in these data, and it shows other features that do not appear here. These data do not include any of the text labels or point locations (other than towns) shown on the Montana 2001-2002 Highway map.The Montana 2001-2002 Highway Map is copyrighted by the Montana Department of Transportation. If you intend to use these data to publish a map that looks similar to the Montana 2001-2002 Highway Map, you should obtain permission from the Montana Department of Transportation. The following shape files are in the collection: Town: Point locations of Montana towns Highway: Interstate, U.S. and state highways in Montana Secondary: Secondary highways in Montana Local: Local roads in Montana County: State and county lines in Montana Stream: Streams and shorelines in Montana Lake: Lake and river polygons in Montana Cdivide: Continental Divide City Urban areas of large towns in Montana Fedland: Federal lands and Indian Reservations in Montana Out_Town: Point locations of towns outside Montana Out_Road: Highways and roads outside Montana Out_Bnd: State, provincial, and county lines outside Montana Out_Stream: Streams and shorelines outside Montana Out_Lake: Lakes and river polygons outside Montana Out_City: Urban areas of large towns outside Montana Out_Fed: Federal lands and Indian Reservations outside Montana
Purpose The data was created for the purpose of printing a 1:1,380,000 scale highway map of Montana. In order to accomplish this, the course of streams and of some highways had to be greatly simplified, many lakes had to be significantly increased in size to become noticeable, and features had to be moved apart from each other so that they could be shown without overlapping. For example, the town of Big Timber sits between Interstate 90 and the Yellowstone River at a point where they are approximately 0.8 miles apart. But the symbols for each of these features each need to be more than a mile wide on the highway map, and there should be about half of a mile of space between them. So the river and the highway were moved so that they are almost 3 miles apart in the data.
