Data for the Belt-Sand Coulee Coal Mine Region, Montana, 1997

Data Provider Montana State Library
Date 1982 - 1997
Content Type Offline Data
Abstract These data cover the Belt-Stockett-Sand Coulee area southeast of Great Falls, Montana. The data include coal mine maps, geology, land use, soils, ownership, and 1:24,000 scale topographic base map data for the region. The mine data were scanned from various historic mine tunnel diagrams and then registered to section corners to bring the data approximately into a real-world coordinate system. The ownership data are registered to an idealized public land survey grid and cannot be used for mapping -- rather a display of the ownership data can be used in conjunction with a map showing public land survey lines to determine ownership of areas on the map. The 1:24,000 scale topographic data include roads, hydrography, railroads, public land survey lines, and 20-foot contour lines. The topographic maps digitized were published in 1982 and 1991. Geology was obtained from three separate maps that were made by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in 1989. Land use was interpreted from aerial photographs of 1995 and field observations made in 1995. Soils were digitized from the 1982 Natural Resource Conservation Service soil survey of Cascace County.
Purpose These data were produced to support mine reclamation efforts of the Reclamation Division of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
