Abstract The Beaver Restoration Assessment Tool (BRAT) is a series of spatial models that provides estimates of beaver dam capacity and management strategies based on physical, vegetation, streamflow and landuse characteristics in an effort to build realistic expectations for partnering with beaver in conservation and restoration (Macfarlane et al. 2017). The Combined Dam Capacity Model includes output layers for Existing Dam Building Capacity, Existing Dam Complex Size, Historic Dam Building Capacity, and Historic Dam Complex Size. The Conservation and Restoration Model provides assessments of Restoration and Conservation Opportunities, Risk of Undesirable Dams, and Unsuitable or Limited Opportunities. These data are available in an online data exploration tool and as standalone datasets (statewide or by 4th code HUCs) for download and analysis in ArcGIS. Additional BRAT data for western South Dakota is also available in the resources provided. These BRAT runs were completed with funding from the BLM Montana/Dakotas State Office and collaboration with the BLM Aquatic Habitat Management Program.
Purpose BRAT is a decision support and planning tool intended to help researchers, restoration practitioners, and resource managers assess the potential for beaver as a stream conservation and restoration agent over large regions and watersheds.
